What skills are needed for todays modern career seeker? Of course that depends on what type of job you are looking for, but there are certain skills and abilities that apply across all jobs. Basic skill sets that will help you move forward not just in a career or a company but also in life. I'm talking about people skills.
The biggest reason a person gets hired is because they make a good impression. No one wants to work with someone they don't like. Candidates are pretty much screened before they come in and interview. They have the qualifications or they wouldn't be asked to come and talk with the team of interviewers. Now it's time to make a good impression. Speak clearly, eye contact, a firm hand shake and all that is good, but you need to show personality. Be personable, happy, and engage the interviewer. Don't just show interest, but be interested.
Be genuine, people can spot a fake. Working on people skills is just like working on anything else the more you do something the better you get. If you know that you lack in people skills interact with people more. Force yourself to be in situations where you have to engage other people. True it comes easier for some than for others, but you can get better.
